Over approximately 400 nautical miles, we will encounter challenging tidal navigation, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, and, weather permitting, a crossing of the English Channel to France. For those seeking to experience navigation under real-world conditions, there are few better sailing areas.

Our starting port is St. Katharine Docks, right next to Tower Bridge in the heart of London. From here, we follow the Thames for 40 nautical miles to its estuary, navigating between sandbanks. Chatham is strategically located on our route and makes a good place for a first stop. After that, we head out into the English Channel.

On this sailing trip, the tides dictate the pace. In the Thames, the English Channel, and later the Solent, we often navigate strictly according to the tidal current. Traffic is also extremely heavy near Dover, and precise navigation and an attentive watch are crucial between the numerous traffic separation schemes. If a low-pressure system with strong southwest winds moves through the English Channel, we have to tack right there. The narrowest point then becomes a bottleneck, demanding the full concentration of the entire crew. We handle such strong wind scenarios responsibly and plan our legs together on board according to the wind and tides. How far west we sail and which ports we call at on the French coast is determined by the wind.

On longer legs of the journey, we sail through the night using a watch system. The longest leg can be around 150 nautical miles. You'll be at the helm, helping plan the navigation and sharing responsibility on deck with the crew. The fact that this is so much fun is also thanks to the SY Imagine. This sporty JV53 with its carbon rig is fast in light winds and remains stable when the wind picks up. Its speed is a particular advantage when navigating tidal conditions, allowing us to make the most of the tidal windows.

In Normandy, Dieppe, Le Havre, or Cherbourg are ideal places to stop ashore. With a bit of luck, we'll find fresh oysters at the market to enjoy on board. A stop in France also means longer stretches of sailing before and after. This creates the perfect balance of sea legs and shore excursions that makes this sailing trip so special. Finally, the Solent awaits, considered one of the most challenging sea areas in the world. Here, strong tidal currents meet large tidal variations in a small area, and we'll experience textbook situations you'd normally only encounter in theory. Ports like Yarmouth or Cowes are perfect for intermediate stops.

Dieser Segeltörn beginnt mitten in London und endet im Solent.
