From Oban on the west coast of Scotland, we sail approximately 500 nautical miles through the Hebrides to the Faroe Islands. This sailing trip combines two very different worlds: the islands of the Hebrides with their anchorages and whisky distilleries, and a multi-day crossing of the North Atlantic that demands precise navigation and good seamanship.<\/p>\n
Off the west coast of Scotland, a wild, unspoiled coastal landscape awaits us, dotted with countless islands. Many of their names are familiar from the labels of world-famous whiskies, as the Hebrides are home to numerous distilleries, some located right next to our anchorages. Places like Tobermory, Islay, or Barra may be on our route and offer opportunities for shore excursions, providing a welcome break from the sea voyages.<\/p>\n
Between the Hebrides, strong tidal currents in the narrow straits dictate our pace and demand careful tidal navigation. For the crossing to the Faroe Islands, we wait for a suitable weather window. Even in summer, low-pressure systems regularly move through the North Atlantic, bringing strong winds and rough seas. We handle such high-wind scenarios responsibly, choosing the timing and course together on board based on the weather conditions.<\/p>\n
The crossing to T\u00f3rshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, covers approximately 250 nautical miles. This leg takes us about two to three days non-stop on the Atlantic, with the entire crew sailing in a watch system, day and night. On this leg, the SY Imagine truly demonstrates its strengths as a seaworthy performance yacht. Finally, the Faroe Islands appear before us, an archipelago of volcanic origin in the middle of the Atlantic between Scotland and Iceland.
