We depart from Kinsale Yacht Club, idyllically and sheltered in a river estuary south of Cork. From there, we sail approximately 600 nautical miles to Scotland, following two routes that could hardly be more different. One route follows the rugged Atlantic coast in western Ireland, while the other leads through the Irish Sea past Dublin. Both routes involve extended offshore passages that will challenge both crew and yacht. If we choose the western route, we'll reach one of the most famous lighthouses in the sailing world, Fastnet Rock, after just one day's sail. Seeing it with our own eyes is a truly special moment for many sailors.<\/p>\n
The weather will determine which route we choose. Along the Irish coast, winds prevail from the southwest to west. These can require us to tack for several days, but they can also provide exhilarating legs where the SY Imagine can demonstrate its full potential. Sea state, wind, and weather vary with each stretch of coastline and can be challenging. This is precisely what makes this route so appealing to sailors. Between Ireland and Scotland, strong tidal currents also dictate our schedule. We will analyze the weather and tides together on board and plan our legs so that the distance and wind conditions are well-matched.<\/p>\n
In the west, ports like Dingle or Galway are ideal. Our berth is right in the center there, and in the evenings we can enjoy Irish pub culture with live music. In Scotland, depending on the wind, there's time for a side trip to the Hebrides or to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. Scotland's islands are famous for their whisky distilleries, and a visit here is practically a must before we moor in Oban.<\/p>\n
We sail long distances with the entire crew, often for several days at a time, working in a watch system, day and night. This demands stamina, concentration, and good seamanship from everyone on board and allows you to noticeably improve your sailing skills.
