From the Elbphilharmonie to Tower Bridge, this sailing trip connects Hamburg and London over approximately 550 nautical miles. Along the way, we can expect a multi-day passage across the North Sea, heavy shipping traffic, and challenging tidal navigation all the way up to the Thames.
We depart from the City Sporthafen marina, right next to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, and sail past the bustling harbor landscape down the Elbe River until we reach the North Sea in Cuxhaven. Before the long passage, a detour to Heligoland, Germany's only high-sea island, is highly recommended. With its draft, the SY Imagine belongs on the open sea, so a true offshore passage across the North Sea awaits us afterward.
The weather will determine our destination. Low-pressure systems frequently move across the North Sea, bringing strong winds and rough seas. They dictate which countries and ports we visit. Depending on the wind, we might set course for the Netherlands, perhaps for Scheveningen, or for a detour to Amsterdam. We could also sail directly to England. We'll analyze the forecasts together on board, use proactive weather navigation to plan our course, and handle strong wind scenarios responsibly. From the English coast onward, the tides will then dictate our progress.
On this multi-day voyage, we sail around the clock on a watch system. You contribute according to your skills, whether on deck, with navigation, or with cooking. Several watch leaders distribute responsibilities among the watches, and a routine of watches, navigation, and life on board quickly develops. The crew is particularly challenged in heavy shipping traffic. Between the numerous traffic separation schemes, precise navigation and attentive watchkeeping are essential. The SY Imagine is ideally suited for such passages. With its carbon rig, the sporty JV53 is fast in light winds and sails safely even in strong winds.
In England, Chatham or Ramsgate are ideal stopovers. From there, we'll take advantage of the favorable tide and sail up the Thames right into the heart of London. Seeing Tower Bridge from the deck is a true highlight of this sailing trip.
